Small Mammal Populations on Ohio Strip- Mined Lands Reclaimed with Herbaceous Vegetation Under Old New Reclamation Laws
نویسنده
چکیده
During the summers of 1978 and 1979, indices to small mammal populations were obtained in east-central Ohio on lands strip-mined for coal. The study sites were on lands reclaimed with herbaceous vegetation before or after enactment of the 1972 Ohio reclamation laws that required topsoiling before seeding. In the two years, 26,489 snap-trap-nights and 564 pitfall-trap-nights were recorded, and 3,403 mammals of eight species were captured. The post-1972 sites, seeded with a grass-legume mixture, a common practice, had the greatest numbers, with Microtus pennsylvanicus accounting for 86% of all captures. The pre-1972 site had the lowest total numbers, with Blarina brevicauda accounting for 62% of all captures. The capture of primarily a single mammalian species on the post-1972 reclaimed areas probably resulted from lack of vegetational diversity and absence of a litter layer. Mining companies commonly mow reclaimed sites 1-3 times annually. As long as this practice continues, the plant and animal communities likely will remain simple. However, small mammal numbers were significantly increased by practices instituted after the 1972 reclamation laws. OHIO J. SCI. 86 (1): 29-32, 1986

Tree recruitment and growth on 20-year-old, unreclaimed surface mined lands in West Virginia
Surface mining in West Virginia has disturbed large tracts of forested land. In the 1930s to 1960s, reclamation generally involved replanting of trees on mined sites, but revegetation practices gradually evolved into seeding of forages for erosion control as federal and state laws were enacted in the 1970s. Reforestation of mined lands has recently become an important issue and both federal and...
متن کاملEffect of Reclamation Technique on Mammal Communitites Inhabiting Wetlands on Mined Lands in East-Central Ohio
Mammal communities were studied from May through August, 1988 to 1990, at four wetland sites in Coshocton and Muskingum counties, OH. Sites represented varying degrees of disturbance from mining activity and subsequent reclamation techniques, including a wetland constructed to treat mine water drainage. Each site was composed of a series of three cattail (Typba latifolid) cells for a balanced e...
متن کاملRestoring forests and associated ecosystem services on appalachian coal surface mines.
Surface coal mining in Appalachia has caused extensive replacement of forest with non-forested land cover, much of which is unmanaged and unproductive. Although forested ecosystems are valued by society for both marketable products and ecosystem services, forests have not been restored on most Appalachian mined lands because traditional reclamation practices, encouraged by regulatory policies, ...
متن کاملSurvey for the Presence of Phytophthora cinnamomi on Reclaimed Mined Lands in Ohio Chosen for Restoration of the American Chestnut
We have been planting blight resistant American chestnut seedlings on reclaimed coal mined areas in Southeastern Ohio, which was once within the natural range of the American chestnut. Towards the goal of restoring the American chestnut, we are testing suitable sites that can aid survival, growth and establishment of planted seedlings pre-inoculated with ectomycorrhizal fungi. Prior to the arri...

Small scale mining activities which involve surface mining is an acceptable means of mineral exploitation in Ghana but has serious environmental consequences. Although a number of laws and research papers have been written on restoration after a piece of land has been mined, not much detail is provided on the actual processes involved. This review paper attempts a look at the process of restora...
